With increases in electricity prices, heating a pool or spa with an electric heater is now a very costly affair.
Electric pool or spa heating works in the same way as a kettle. Electricity runs through a metal element and electrical energy is converted into heat energy which is transferred to the water to warm it.
In actual fact the typical amount of power consumed by an electric pool/spa heater is in the same range as an average electric kettle. However, while you may only use your kettle a few times a day – a pool/spa heater left on all the time is using that much power every time the water temperature drops. What’s more, it’s trying to keep more than a thousand litres of water at a high temperature during the coldest parts of the night as well.
It would seem logical to turn the spa heater off, and only turn it on when it’s needed. But an electric spa heater takes more than half a day to heat a spa from cold, which isn’t practical for most families.
Solar heating is the most economical and environmentally friendly option and it can increase the use of the pool by up to four months!
How it works
Put simply pool water is circulated through a series of tubes (collector) usually mounted on the roof, heat is absorbed and the heated water is then returned to the pool.
